TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular disease is a complex condition that can cause daily discomfort and facial pain which involve the joint (TMJ), ligaments and muscles of the jaw.

We can typically identify multiple factors that may be contributing to the origin of the symptoms prior to developing a course of treatment.

WHAT IS TMJ DISORDER?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jawbone to the skull, allowing your jaw to move smoothly for actions such as speaking and chewing. When this joint becomes misaligned or dysfunctional, it can lead to pain, tension, and other symptoms. Common causes of TMJ disorder include jaw injury, teeth grinding, stress, arthritis, or muscle imbalances.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition that affects the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, leading to pain, discomfort, and difficulty moving your jaw. TMD symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can interfere with everyday activities like speaking, eating, and even sleeping.

TMJ TREATMENT OPTIONS

Our practice specializes in providing effective and personalized TMJ treatments to relieve pain and restore the function of your jaw. Our team works closely with you to identify the underlying cause of your TMJ disorder and design a tailored treatment plan.

Here are some of the most common treatments we offer:

CUSTOM NIGHTGUARDS : If teeth grinding or jaw clenching is contributing to your TMJ pain, a custom-fitted night guard can protect your teeth and help reduce strain on the jaw muscles. This simple, non-invasive solution is worn while you sleep to prevent further damage.

PHYSICAL THERAPY AND JAW EXERCISES : Strengthening and stretching exercises for the jaw and neck muscles can alleviate tension and improve mobility. We may recommend a series of physical therapy exercises to help reduce pain and restore proper movement.

BITE ADJUSTMENT : Misalignment of your bite can contribute to TMJ discomfort. An occlusal adjustment involves gently reshaping your teeth to improve your bite, relieving stress on the jaw joint and muscles.

BOTOX® is sometimes used as a treatment for TMJ disorders, specifically to relax the muscles in the jaw and reduce pain. It’s a non-invasive option that provides relief for patients who experience chronic muscle tension or headaches.

LASER THERAPY : Laser photobiomodulation is a non-invasive treatment that uses light energy to reduce inflammation and promote healing in the muscles and joints of the jaw.
